Kastengel

Kastengel is a beloved Indonesian cheese cookie, commonly served during festive occasions such as Eid and Christmas. With its rich, buttery taste and crisp texture, this treat is a must-have for any celebration. The name “Kastengel” originates from the Dutch words kaas (cheese) and stengel (stick), reflecting its European influence.
Kastengel is commonly referred to as “Dutch-Indonesian cheese sticks” or simply “cheese cookies” in English. Since it originates from Dutch influence, some also call it “cheese shortbread sticks” due to its buttery and crumbly texture. However, there is no exact English equivalent, so most people still use the name “Kastengel”.
Unlike sweet cookies, Kastengel has a savory profile, thanks to the generous amount of cheese in the dough and as a topping. This cheese-packed delicacy pairs perfectly with tea or coffee, making it an irresistible snack for cheese lovers.
Now, let’s make your own Kastengel with this simple and budget-friendly recipe!
