Workshop on Optimizing AI in English Language Teaching (ELT)

On Friday, October 18th, 2024, the English Education Study Program, in collaboration with the English Literature Study Program, hosted an internal workshop for lecturers titled *"Optimizing AI in English Language Teaching (ELT)."* The event took place at Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) and was attended by faculty members from both study programs. The workshop was led by Phillip Taw, a representative from the Regional English Language Office (RELO), who shared his expertise on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English language education.
Key Highlights of the Workshop:
1. Introduction to AI in ELT
Phillip Taw began by discussing how AI is revolutionizing the way English is taught and learned. He highlighted how AI tools and applications can assist lecturers in developing more engaging and personalized learning experiences for their students.
2. Prompts for AI-powered Language Learning
The session covered the prompts that can be used to instruct AI to assist language learning preparation. Taw emphasized the importance of utilizing these prompts to meet student and lecturer needs to improve the quality of teaching & learning process.
3. Practical Applications of AI
Participants were introduced to practical AI applications, for instance, chatbots for making lesson plan and syllabus. Phillip provided live demonstrations of how these technologies could be integrated into classroom activities and assignments to make learning more interactive and efficient.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the insightful session and discussed how they could apply the ideas presented in their classrooms. The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where lecturers shared their thoughts on suitable prompts they have ever used in enhancing the effectiveness of language instruction.
This workshop marks a significant step towards the future of English Language Teaching at UNESA, as educators embrace the potential of AI to create more dynamic and effective learning environments.
